<p>Proactive Crisis Intervention, (PCI) is a non-aggressive approach to preventing and managing challenges to services and individual workers. The focus is on protecting and promoting dignity and helping all concerned to develop assertive, clear communication. In situations where physical restraint is unavoidable only approved techniques can be used and these are reviewed during de-briefing.</p>
<p><span class="highlight"><br />
Stage 1: Access the capabilities of the organisation to undertake PCI</span></p>
<p>&bull; Audit of policies &amp; proceedures for senior managers at location where PCI training to take place. <br />
&bull; Auditing policies concerned with physical restraint and care planning / person centred planning. <br />
&bull; Re-writing policies where necessary to reflect ethos and practice of PCI. <br />
<br />
<span class="highlight">Stage 2: Meet with senior managers </span></p>
<p>&bull; Explain changes to policies and implications for practice. <br />
&bull; Respond to questions and issues arising from changes. <br />
<br />
<span class="highlight">Stage 3: Through basic training develop knowledge and skills of all care and support staff to assess challenging situations </span></p>
<p>Two day course, in groups of 8 to 12, includes: <br />
&bull; Theory of challenging behaviour. <br />
&bull; Anticipating and preventing incidents. <br />
&bull; Critical incidents and the cycle of behaviour. <br />
&bull; Breakaway techniques. <br />
&bull; De-briefing. <br />
&bull; Promoting learning from incidents and promoting prevention.</p>
<p><span class="highlight">Stage 4: Develop the knowledge and skills of key staff to plan for and intervene following assessment of challenging situation. Advanced training for key staff who may need to implement approved PCI restraint practices.</span></p>
<p>Three day course, in groups of 8 to 12, includes: <br />
&bull; Behaviour risk assessment. <br />
&bull; Overview of person centred planning. <br />
&bull; Physical intervention and the law, including the law relating to self defence. <br />
&bull; Duty of care. <br />
&bull; Forms of restraint not allowed as part of PCI. <br />
&bull; Reporting and accountability. <br />
&bull; Post incident procedures. <br />
&bull; Implications for practice and medical considerations. <br />
&bull; Physical intervention techniques. <br />
&bull; Verification of competence. <br />
<br />
<span class="highlight">Stage 5: Develop the knowledge and skills of key staff to review and revise person centred plans following assessment and implementation of PCI </span></p>
<p>Advanced training for key staff who have completed Stage 4 or who will be supervising key staff in implementing PCI. <br />
Two day training course, in groups of 8 to 12, includes: <br />
&bull; What is person centred planning? <br />
&bull; Empowerment of individuals to participate in planning their own lives in a way that makes sense to them. <br />
&bull; Developing individual plans. <br />
&bull; Developing communication passports. <br />
&bull; Reviewing and revising individual plans. <br />
<br />
<span class="highlight">Stage 6: Update and revise the organisation&rsquo;s and the individual&rsquo;s abilities to continue to implement PCI annually </span></p>
<p>&bull; Re-accreditation audit and training required annually and includes: <br />
&bull; Re-accreditation of site/location. <br />
&bull; Audit of incidents. <br />
&bull; Review of de-briefing methodology and implementation of preventative strategies. <br />
&bull; Discussion with Senior Management regarding policies and proceedures. <br />
&bull; Question and answer session with key workers if requested. <br />
&bull; Re-accreditation of individuals previously trained to Stage 4. <br />
&bull; Physical intervention and the law update. <br />
&bull; Implications of techniques. <br />
&bull; Revision of physical intervention techniques. <br />
&bull; Re-accreditation of competence.</p>
<h3>Course costs</h3>
<p>For up to 12 people for in house training or at SCOTVQ Training Centre in Stirling:&nbsp;</p>
<p>1 Day Course: &pound;300 +VAT <br />
&lsquo;Introductory Course: What is Challenging Behaviour and Understanding the Need for Holistic Care and Support Planning&rsquo;</p>
<p>2 Day Course: &pound;720 +VAT (Individual &pound;75 +VAT) <br />
&lsquo;Values and Primary De-escalation Techniques&rsquo;</p>
<p>3 Day Course: &pound;1200 +VAT (Individual &pound;125 +VAT) <br />
&lsquo;Assessing Risk, Legislation and Medical Considerations including Proactive Physical Intervention Techniques&rsquo;</p>
<p>Annual 1 Day Course: &pound;360 +VAT (Individual &pound;40 +VAT) <br />
&lsquo;Proactive Physical Intervention Re-accreditation&rsquo; <br />
<br />
SCOTVQ has developed the course Proactive Crisis Intervention, to meet the needs of a wide range of service providers. Whilst the basic framework for each stage of training remains the same, the content of each training course is tailored to meet the needs of the individual organisation and those who use its services.</p>
