<p>There is much confusion within the sector regarding the purpose and aims of both supervision and appraisal. Supervision is a vital part of managing, motivating and supporting staff. Line managers who place value on implementing a model of professional supervision are in a position to provide structured guidance and support to help staff manage their workload, clarify tasks and identify training and development needs. An effective supervisory relationship includes enabling team members to manage stress, identify problems at the earliest possible opportunity and improves communication within the organisation. Performance is often improved and staff retention rates may be increased.</p>
<p>The objective of an appraisal system should be to help improve individual performance and to realise the potential of employees thereby achieving better results for the organisation. Appraisal is usually an annual event at which feedback on performance in the past and currently is given, setting objectives and targets for the next year and identifying development needs to improve performance.</p>
<p>This course is designed to:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Clarify the nature and purpose of professional supervision, the skills and values inherent in good supervisors and how to conduct supervision meetings.</li>
    <li>Clarify the nature and purpose of appraisal and how to implement annual appraisals to improve individual performance and to realise the potential of employees thereby achieving better results for the organisation.</li>
